2010 was one of the first years in which I not only set goals, but actively tracked them through (most) the year.
Granted – I went through a number of months halfway through the year, in which I didn’t look at (or even think about) my goal list. Sometimes, life happens.
But I revisited that list this fall, and realized that I wasn’t that far from actually having a good year.
What do you know.
Below are the goals I set for the year, and how I’ve done against them.
In another post, I’ll share how I was able to make this progress.
But in the meantime, here’s food for discussion.
- Write 12 books (including a Children’s book)
Status:
- Wrote 3 eBooks so far this year:
- The RumpelStiltskin Papers
- The 13 Forbidden Secrets of JV Giveaway Hacking
- The Personal Brand Formula (Will be posted on Jan 1st)- I’ve also written 7 short stories for my three-year old son.
- And have “co-written” a book with three-year old son.Not 12 books, granted. But like Seinfeld says: “It’s not nothing.”

- Read 30 books
Status:
- Completed 18 really good books:1. Jan 4: Reinvention – Brian Tracy
2. Jan 14: The Power of Focus – Jack Canfield et al.
3. Jan 18: Internet Marketing from the Real Experts
4. Jan 24: Make Money Like a Modern Guru – Eben Pagan
5. Jan 27: Design Your Best Year Ever – Darren Hardy
6. Feb 2: 50 Success Classics – Tom Butler-Bowden
7. Feb 10: Crush It! – Gary Vaynerchuk
8. Feb 17:Linchpin – Seth Godin
9. Mar 10: Three Feet from Gold – Sharon Lechter, Greg S Reid
10. July 10: The Guru’s Nightmare – Alex Jeffreys
11. Nov 12: Rapid Video Blogging – Gideon Shalwick
12. Nov 24: Escape from Cubicle Nation – Pamela Slim
13. Nov 30: This Year I Will – MJ Ryan
14. Dec 2: Go Givers Sell More – Bob Burg
15. Dec 4: The Power of Less – Leo Babauta
16. Dec 7: Life Without Limits – Nick Vujicic
17. Dec 13: Instant Product Creation System – Jason Fladlien
18. Dec 17: You, Inc. – Harry Beckwith- And half-read an additional 3 books
I didn’t get close to 30. But did get through some mind-expanding reading. - Launch a web site that helps people to set and achieve world-changing goals

-Built Rat-Race-Escape-Artists mailing list to 500

- Created “Your Life Certificate” video with renowned Internet Marketer Stephanie Mulac (will launch soon)
- Built a 10,000 person fan page for NaijasMostIncredible.com. Sharing positive messages of entrepreneurship
There are a handful of personal goals I set, which I haven’t included here.
But suffice to say – setting goals really helped in the family and relationships department, too.
There are goals I came nowhere close to hitting:
- Running a half marathon,
- Doing a triathlon,
- My Internet Marketing revenue goals,
- Reading the entire Bible (I read a third of it)
But as I’ve often written about, the failures are even more important than the successes.
Because they afford the greatest opportunity for growth.
There’s more detail I could have put into this post – but it would take more time to research the details, etc.
And it’s almost 2011. So let’s just ship this darn thing.
Happy New Year. Do take some time to reflect on what you did well in 2010. Celebrate those moments.
And make plans for 2011.
Goal setting does work. If you back it up with persistent and focused action.

And you’ll achieve your income and other goals in 2011. I have already seen how great of a person you are and know that you have it in you.

Whatup, Shae Bynes!
A lot of this success was thanks to your persistent (and sometimes not so gentle) prodding. Additionally, I’ve been inspired by your steady progress in recent years. God is surely using you, and I’m learning from that.

Great post Bolaji,
I have set my goals for this year, it took me quite a while to go back over the past year and look at what I have and haven’t achieved even though my list is a lot smaller than yours! It seems like you have had a pretty good 2010!
Heres to making 2011 even better!
Thanks
Simon

Hallo Simon!
Thanks very much for the comment, bruv.
Hey – in 2010 I didn’t have my goals in place until the 3rd week of January! To me, it doesn’t matter when the process begins.
Just that the process (of goal setting, and goal getting) does begin.
I hope the length of my list isn’t discouraging. I was laid off in April of 2010. That did allow me to have more time to pursue my goals. Granted, my 2nd son was born two months later, and I became a stay-at-home Dad (still am). I call him “The Boss”, because he dictates my work schedule! LOL!
The bottom line is that life happens, everyone has challenges, and there are always reasons for us to not take that next challenging but worthwhile step toward our goals:
Sleep deprivation…
Financial deprivation…
Motivational deprivation…
Enjoyment deprivation…
Happiness deprivation…
ha ha. But the folks who’ve succeeded, are not the ones without problems. They’re the ones who overcame those problems. Mind you, there are always new problems. But there is also always hope
Thanks very much for sharing your perspective, and a link to your 2010 business review . I’m looking forward to more posts like this review on your site! We all learn from them.
Cheers, Simon.

Hi Bolaji,
Wow, goal setting must be powerful. I would be proud of that list if I had set it at the beginning of the year! Even then I would have considered it a stretch.
You have convinced me to set clear goals this year and monitor my progress. Thanks for that. I have Brian Tracy’s goal planner and will blow the dust off it and put it to use.
All the best for 2011 and look forward to following your progress.
I need to write a new blog post for a start. Better get to it.
best wishes,
David

Hi David! Thanks a lot, man. The funny thing is that – some of those opportunities (like the campaign to help a non-profit charity organization win $20,000) just fell in my lap. I did have to choose to focus on it. But I think when you set goals, even when you don’t know how you’ll accomplish them, your subconscious starts to notice the things that are on your mind. Hidden in plain sight.
It’s like when you’ve just bought a new car, and then you start seeing that same car in traffic everywhere! LOL!
The Brian Tracy Planner should be a good one – BEST OF LUCK!
If you can get an accountability buddy, and also share your goals in a discussion forum or on your blog, you’ll have no choice to but to move toward those goals!
Enjoy the journey… and happy new year, David!

Hey there, John!
Ha ha – I’m just trying to Earn Money Online With John – that’s all I’m trying to do.
I don’t know if I noted this elsewhere – but I was laid off of my 9-to-5 in April 2010.
After a couple of months of waffling back-and-forth, I decided to no longer seek another 9-to-5.
And to instead commit to my true calling.
So 2010 was not a great year financially.
But was a PHENOMENAL YEAR in terms of moving in the direction that I’ve wanted to, but been afraid to, for a decade and a half.
2011 is all about providing extra-ordinary value to my audience… so that’s what I’ll be hyper-focused on.
If I do that well, consistently, I’ll be making money online with John!!!
Thanks very much for your comment – I greatly appreciate it!
Checking your site out now…
What an amazing year! That’s a busy year and extremely productive. I know in 2010 I started to read more and so far in 2011 I’ve been reading non-fiction books as well. I love being inspired and learning new things.
Last October, I was out of shape and weighed the heaviest I had ever been! I was not happy. So I decided to set a goal to help me lose weight. I went for a half marathon. Long story short I did a half marathon in December finishing in 2:04! I didn’t walk. I didn’t stop. I lost 12 pounds and felt amazing. My clothes fit again.
Then on Feb 13 I did my second half marathon with a time of 1:58 even though about mile 6-7 I felt my legs already tiring out so the last half of it was all mental and heart. I was really proud of that effort.
If you need some advice or help about reaching your goal of running a half, let me know and I could share what running plan I used and anything I learned along the way!
New subscriber here.
You’ve already inspired me:)
Much obliged, Rob.
I just read your latest article – it’s BLAZING. Glad to see you blogging regularly again? (Looked @ archives… I think you took a break fora bit.)

Mr. Bolaji,

Great to hear from you. Hey – you’d be a great kid’s author. I think you and I share the same juvenile sense of humor. LOL!
How’s things? How’s that superstar son of yours, Brandon? Is he in MLB yet?
Rock on, Duck Dodgers… I mean, Scott Rogers.
